Case Study: custom playground design with local identity

Standard equipment fills a space, but purposeful custom playground design defines a destination. Real difference rarely comes from catalogue products, but from how precisely a design responds to its local context. Today, communities, municipalities, and developers increasingly expect playgrounds that reflect local identity, culture, and a distinct sense of place.

The practical question for international partners is how to achieve this uniqueness without the risk of redesigning every structure from the ground up. The answer lies in combining proven product families with carefully targeted customization. The core system remains technically consistent, while selected visual and thematic elements are adapted. This allows the creation of a thematic playground that is genuinely distinctive, while manufacturing, certification, and maintenance remain predictable and cost-effective.

From bespoke vision to modular logic

In Kecskemét, Hungary, the project was based on a unique landscape concept—including several fully bespoke elements—while many of the main play structures followed this modular customization approach. This strategic balance between bespoke design and proven product logic can best be understood through two specific examples from the site.

Example 1: Adapting the Owl Tower

One of the key structures is based on the Owl Tower, a well-established play system within the Faberland product range. As a manufacturer, we have supplied this model for multiple successful projects where its structural reliability and play value are already proven. The product is supported by complete technical documentation, which is readily available for planners and project partners during specification and tender preparation.

In this project, the structural system, platform heights, and safety solutions remained unchanged. The adaptation focused on visible layers—colors, surface graphics, and detailing aligned with the local character. The tower preserved its engineering integrity while becoming an integral part of the site’s story. Rather than appearing as a standard insert, the adapted Owl Tower contributed meaningfully to the overall narrative of the playground. The use of durable, weather-resistant materials ensures that these custom visual elements maintain their quality over time under heavy public use.

Example 2: Refining the Farm Playhouse

The second example is based on the Farm Playhouse, part of our themed playhouse portfolio.

These structures are consistently popular because they encourage role-play and social interaction, supporting longer engagement from families.

The Farm model already provides a strong thematic framework. For this development, the proven structural concept was maintained while visual elements were adjusted to align with the specific landscape concept. Through targeted refinements in color and decorative panels, the playhouse became fully integrated into the playground’s identity. The unit remained technically consistent, yet its appearance was carefully tailored to support the individual character of the entire project. This method ensures that future maintenance remains simple, as standard replacement parts are always available despite the custom exterior.

Scalable customization without reinvention

Together, these examples demonstrate that meaningful custom playground design does not require total structural reinvention. Instead, it depends on distinguishing between the elements that ensure long-term reliability and those that can be adapted to express local identity.

Because the underlying systems remain consistent, distributors benefit from technical clarity across different applications. This creates a practical framework that supports repeatability across regions while allowing each development to retain its distinctive character. This approach enables long-term portfolio growth without sacrificing design individuality at the project level.

Long-term value

This strategy creates a balance where design flexibility and technical consistency reinforce each other. It is particularly relevant in professional environments where visual distinctiveness and safety complianc are expected simultaneously. By combining bespoke landscape concepts with adaptable product families, distinctive playgrounds can be created without compromising reliability.

If this scalable customization approach aligns with your strategic goals and upcoming projects, we would be glad to explore potential cooperation.
